What is a Lung Transplant?

A lung transplant is a complex surgical procedure that aims at replacing a damaged or diseased lung with a healthy lung taken from a deceased donor. The procedure is recommended to patients suffering from an end-stage lung disease, who have stopped responding to alternate treatments. Whether one of the lungs is been transplanted or both of them, it solely depends upon the individual needs of the patient.

The lungs perform various vital functions which are important for our existence.  if the lungs fail to function properly, it can lead to the deficiency of oxygen in our body. This can give rise to serious complications. There are many conditions that can interfere with the normal functioning of the lungs. These include:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis was marked by the scarring of the lungs
  • Pulmonary hypertension, which refers to elevated blood pressure in the lungs
  • Cystic fibrosis

Lung transplant is not an option for everyone and certain factors are considered to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. Lung cancer is not for patients who have a recent medical history of malignancy, have chronic hepatic, renal or heart disease, and are not willing adware to the healthy lifestyle changes that are a must post-transplant.

Things you need to know

  • The procedure is quite complicated and may take anywhere between 4 to 12 hours, or even more in some cases
  • You will be required to stay at the hospital for about a week
  • Time taken for convalescence is also considerably longer as compared to other procedures. On average, the patient may take about 3 months to recover.

  • You need to inform your doctor about any medication or health supplement that you have been taking
  • You will be required to undergo certain tests and screening for detailed assessment and evaluation of your health
  • You need to prepare yourself mentally by discussing the procedure and the potential outcomes with your doctor.

Procedure involved

  • The procedure is performed under the influence of general anaesthesia, using the conventional surgical technique.
  • A tube will be inserted in your windpipe via your mouth to help you breathe throughout the procedure
  • The surgical site will be cleaned followed by making a large incision to accept the diseased long.
  • The main airway and the blood vessels will be detached from the damaged lung and connected to the donor lung.
  • Once the new lung has been placed perfectly, the incision will be sealed and covered.
  • In some cases, the surgeon may also use a heart-lung bypass machine.

What to expect after the procedure?

  • Right after the transplant, you will be shifted to the Intensive Care Unit where you will be kept under observation for several days
  • Once a condition is stable you will be removed from the mechanical ventilator and shifted to the recovery room.
  • You will require nearly three months of frequent monitoring to make sure that there are no complications
  • You will be required to take immunosuppressants throughout your life to alleviate the risks of organ rejection
  • You will have to manage your medication and therapies religiously
  • You will be required to adhere to a healthy lifestyle that helps to sustain your new lungs
