How to prepare for the treatment?

  • A kidney donor can be any deceased or living donor, related or unrelated to you. When deciding your kidney transplant, the healthcare team will consider various factors when evaluating whether a donor kidney will be a good match for you.
  • The healthcare will conduct blood typing, tissue typing, crossmatch, to determine if the donor is fit for you.
  • A doctor will also analyze you for a physical exam, Imaging studies, such as MRI, X-ray, CT scans, Blood tests, and Psychological evaluation.

Procedure involved

  • Generally, the following procedures are followed while conducting kidney transplant:
  • You will have to change into a hospital gown and empty your bladder before the operation.
  • Your heart and blood pressure status will be checked, and a healthcare professional will start an intravenous (IV) line in your arm, and anaesthesia will be given.
  • The surgeon will make an incision in the lower part of one side of your abdomen and insert the new kidney into your body.
  • Unless your own kidneys are leading to complications such as high blood pressure, kidney stones, pain or infection, they are allowed to be in the same place.
  • In the lower part of your abdomen just above one of your legs, the surgeon fixes the blood vessels of the new kidney to other blood vessels.
  • The new kidney's ureter — the tube that attaches the kidney to the bladder — is linked to your bladder.

What to expect after the treatment?

  • You may have to spend several days to a week in the hospital.
  • The healthcare team will monitor your condition continuously to watch for signs of complications.
  • Sometimes, it may take time for your new kidney to begin function properly, until then you may need temporary dialysis.
  • You may resume your normal activities or return to work within eight weeks after transplant.
  • You may be advised not to lift anything heavy or exercise other than walking until the wound has healed.
  • The doctor may call you for follow-up in a few weeks to check how well your new kidney is working and ensure your body is not rejecting it.
  • The doctor may advise you to take drugs called immunosuppressants to prevent your immune system from attacking and rejecting your new kidney.

Potential risks that you need to know about:
Some of the risks associated with a Kidney transplant are:

  • Blood clots and bleeding
  • Leaking from or blockage of the tube that joins the kidney to the bladder
  • Infection
  • Failure or rejection of the donated kidney
  • An infection or cancer that could come from a donated kidney.
  • Death, stroke, and heart attack
