What is Heart Transplant?
A heart transplant is a procedure in which a weakened, diseased, failing heart is removed and replaced with a healthier donor heart. Usually, heart transplant treatment is reserved for people whose condition hasn't improved with surgeries and medications.

Things you need to know

  • Heart Transplant is performed under the influence of anesthesia.
  • The procedure takes about 4 to 6 hours.
  • You will be required to stay in the hospital for about five days to a few weeks followed by a few more days of rest
  • Your average length of stay will be around two weeks to a month.

How to prepare for the treatment?

  • The doctor will determine to evaluate whether you are eligible for a heart transplant or not by conducting a physical examination.
  • If you are the right candidate for a heart donor, the hospital will put you on a waiting list.
  • While you are on the waiting list, the medical team will monitor your heart and other organs.
  • You will have to take care of your heart by eating well and being active.
  • If the wait is too long, the medical team may recommend you to have a device implanted to support your heart while waiting for a donor organ.
  • Within four hours of organ removal from the donor, a heart transplant has to occur.
  • Keep your mobile phones always with you in case you are called.
  • After being notified of the heart transplant, you will have to go to the hospital immediately. So, make a travel plan ahead of time.
  • Once you arrive at the hospital, your healthcare team will conduct a final analysis to determine if the donor's heart is suitable for you and if you are prepared for surgery.

 Procedure involved

  • Heart Transplant surgery is an open-heart procedure that may take several hours. If you have already gone through previous heart surgeries, the surgery is more complex and will take more time.
  • Your heart and blood pressure status will be checked, and a healthcare professional will start an intravenous (IV) line in your arm, and anaesthesia will be given.
  • A heart-lung bypass machine will be utilized to pump the blood while your heart is stopped.
  • For an open-heart surgery, the chest area will be shaved, and the surgeon will make an incision down the centre of the chest to just above the navel.
  • The surgeon will replace the diseased heart and sew the donor's heart. The heart will be attached to the major blood vessels. As soon as the blood flow is restored, the new heart starts beating.
  • As the surgery gets completed, the surgeon will shock your heart with small paddles to restart your heartbeat. The blood will re-enter your heart and tubes to the heart-lung bypass machine will be removed.
  • The doctor will drain the blood and other fluids from around the heart using tubes.

What to expect after the treatment?

  • You will be taken to the recovery room and later to the ICU and monitored for several days.
  • You will be connected with machines that will continually reveal your blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG) tracing, other pressure readings, breathing rate, and your oxygen level.
  • You will likely have a tube in your throat that's linked to a ventilator to help you breathe until you can breathe on your own.
  • You receive pain medicine if you are hurting.
  • You may be on IV (intravenous) medicines to maintain your blood pressure and heart and handle any problems with bleeding.
  • The time spent at the hospital varies from person to person.
  • However, the transplant team will monitor your heart even after you leave the hospital. People are usually asked to stay close to a transplant centre for the first three months.
  • Doctors will closely watch for any signs or symptoms of rejection of the heart by the body. You may have to undergo frequent heart biopsies after a heart transplant when rejection is most likely to occur.
  • The doctor may advise you to take drugs called immunosuppressants to prevent your immune system from attacking and rejecting your new heart.
  • You will have to follow a lifelong care plan. You may also be asked to undergo cardiac rehabilitation which helps you regain your strength and improve the quality of life.

Potential risks that you need to know about:
Some of the risks associated with heart transplant are:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Rejection of the donor's heart
  • Primary graft failure
  • Problems with your arteries
  • Medication side effects
  • Cancer
