What is Hand Transplant?

Hand transplant is a treatment procedure for people who have had one or both hands amputated. In a hand transplant, you receive one or two donor hands and some part of the forearms from a departed donor. A hand transplant helps you regain some hand sensation and function.

Things you need to know

  • Hand Transplant is performed under the influence of anaesthesia.
  • The procedure takes about 18 to 24 hours.
  • You will be required to stay in the hospital for about seven to 10 days followed by a few more days of rest
  • Your average length of stay will be around two weeks to a month.

How to prepare for the treatment?

  • A transplant team will evaluate you for a hand transplant.
  • You must pass a comprehensive physical exam involving blood tests, X-rays, and other diagnostic tests.
  • You should not have any severe medical problems, such as kidney disease, heart disease or diabetes.
  • Avoid smoking
  • Do not have any severe infections.
  • Physical therapists will work with you to increase the flexibility and strength in your arms before your transplant.
  • After your transplant, you will have to stay near your transplant team for several months.

Procedure involved

  • Hand transplant surgery is a sophisticated operation that can take 18 to 24 hours to perform.
  • A team of surgeons will operate your surgery and keep your family with periodic updates on how your surgery is continuing.
  • Once the donor's hand is ready to be fixed to your arm, your surgeons will use small metal plates to attach your bones to the bones of the donor's hand.
  • With the help of special sutures, your surgeons will then attach the blood vessels, nerves and tendons.
  • An operating room microscope will be used by the surgeons to place the sutures.
  • Once all the parts of the donor hand and recipient's arm have been attached, the skin and stitches are closed.

What to expect after the treatment?

  • After your surgery, you will be moved into an intensive care unit (ICU).
  • The healthcare team will check your hand or hands function and ask you to move your fingers.
  • To promote blood circulation in your donor hand or hands, the room will be kept at a higher temperature.
  • Once you are stable enough, you will be moved from ICU to a different hospital room.
  • You may have to stay in the hospital for seven to ten days.
  • Some pain medicines will be prescribed to you by the doctor following the transplant.
  • A special hand therapist will work on your physical therapy. You will be wearing a splint on your hand to keep your hand stable and will be taught exercises to perform on your own.
  • After your surgery, you may have trouble sleeping and adapting to your recent routine of caring for your donor hand or hands.

Potential risks that you need to know about:
Some of the risks associated with a hand transplant are:

  • Surgical risks: Risks typical of transplant surgery such as bleeding, infection, and blood clot.
  • Rejection risks: The body may reject the new hand, and your immune system will then try to destroy your donor's hand.
  • Immunosuppressant risks: You will need to take Immunosuppressants to prevent your body from rejecting your donor hand or hands. But this may result in an increased risk of serious infections, Kidney damage, Osteoporosis, increased cancer risk, acne, weight gain, bruising, hair loss and headaches.
