What is Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression surgery helps in creating more room for your spinal cord. Some conditions such as spinal stenosis or a herniated disc can cause the spinal canal to narrow, leading to a wide range of symptoms. There are various methods for spinal decompression. In some cases, you may need partial discectomy, whereas in others you may require a foraminotomy or a laminectomy.

Things you need to know

  • Spinal decompression is performed under the influence of anesthesia.
  • The procedure takes about 2 to 6 hours.
  • You will be required to stay in the hospital for about 1 to 4 days followed by a few more days of rest
  • Your average length of stay will be around 1 to 4 days.

How to prepare for the treatment?

  • Your healthcare provider will discuss the entire procedure with you.
  • The doctor will analyze your complete medical history by performing a complete physical exam, blood tests, or other diagnostic tests.
  • If you are allergic or sensitive to any medicines such as iodine, latex, tape, or anaesthetic agents, tell the healthcare provider.
  • Also, tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines, supplements that you may be taking.
  • Avoid smoking
  • You will have to arrange for someone to take you back home.

Procedure involved
Generally, the procedure is as follows:

  • The surgeon will have a team of experts working with him to ensure that your surgery goes as smoothly as possible.
  • A small incision will be made. The surgeon will utilize a specialized microscope and surgical instruments designed for the procedure mentioned above.
  • If you have to undergo a partial discectomy, your surgeon will determine which section of the herniated disc is pushing against your spinal cord or nerves. They will then carefully remove the diseased infected portions.
  • In the case of a laminectomy, a part of the vertebra known as the lamina will be taken out. This procedure will create a space for your spinal cord to move freely within the spinal canal. This is a routine procedure applied for spinal stenosis.
  • Sometimes, if the bone is impaired or weakened by the laminectomy, your specialist will also perform a fusion surgery. With the help of rods and screws, the surgeon will carry out the fusion surgery to balance the section of your spine where the laminectomy was performed.
  • A surgeon carries out a foraminotomy by removing tissue or bone within the spinal canal that may be causing a narrowing. This, as with the laminectomy, allows room for the spinal cord to move more freely.
  • After your procedures are performed, your incision will be sealed, and you'll be moved to a particular area known as recovery. The healthcare provider team will rigorously monitor you until you're awake.
  • The medical team will continue to check your vitals, giving pain medications and once you are stable, you'll be transferred to another part of the hospital.
  • After your surgery, you may have to stay in the hospital anywhere from 1 to 4 days, on average.
  • This will differ depending on your surgery's complexity and how well you're reacting to the pain medications.
  • During this stay, you will be shifted to oral pain medications and may start light physical therapy, if warranted.

What to expect after the treatment?

  • The surgeon will review your restrictions and guidelines for recovery with you.
  • You will have to take prescribed pain medications.
  • When you return home, you will face fatigue. It is better that you take plenty of rest.
  • To keep your blood flowing and healthy, go for short and frequent walks.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • You may have to take a follow-up appointment with your doctor to go for some tests such as X-rays and MRI to track your progress.
