What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is an orthopaedic condition marked by an abnormal sideways curvature in the spine. It may be triggered by an underlying condition such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy and affects nearly 3 per cent of the adolescent population. In the majority of conditions, the deformity is mild at first and continues to aggravate with time. In severe cases, it can even lead to chronic disability and even interfere with the normal functioning of the lungs. Some symptoms associated with scoliosis include uneven shoulders and waist

Some children with scoliosis will be required to wear a brace so as to prevent any further progression of the deformity. Surgery is usually the last resort of treatment and recommended only when other treatment options fail to work. The surgery usually has 3 goals:

  • Curb the progression of the deformity and prevent it from getting worse
  • Alleviate the adversity of the deformity by correcting and straightening the curves
  • Preserve the trunk balance by maintaining the spine's natural curve.

Things you need to know

  • The time taken for the surgery depends upon the type of surgery which is decided after proper evaluation and assessment
  • The time taken for recovery and the average length of stay also vary depending upon the same.

Procedure involved

  • The surgical procedure is carried out under the influence of anaesthesia.
  • During spinal fusion, the surgeon will make an incision in your neck, back (directly above the spine) or abdomen, to access the spine.
  • A bone graft taken from a bone bank or your own body will be used to fuse the vertebrae together
  • The bone graft will be placed between two spines and fixed with the help of metal plates, screws and rods.
  • Once the procedure is complete, the incision will be closed and covered.
  • Growing systems may be used to delay spinal fusion. It involves the use of special rods that are anchored to the spine. The child needs to undergo a revision surgery every 6 to 12 months, so as to increase the length of the rod. Once your spine is close enough to the natural alignment, spinal fusion will be performed. The procedure is usually recommended for patients who are too young to undergo spinal fusion.

What to expect after the procedure?
