Laminectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the complete or partial removal of the lamina, commonly referred to as the vertebral bone, so as to relieve excess pressure from the spinal cord and the nerve roots. How to prepare for the treatment?

• You need to undergo certain screenings and tests for proper evaluation and assessment of your condition
• You need to inform your doctors about any medicine or supplements that you have been taking

• You need to fast, starting 12 hours prior to the surgery

Procedure involved

• The procedure is carried out under the influence of general or local anaesthesia 
• The surgical site is cleaned, followed by making an incision 
• The muscles and ligaments will be moved aside for better access

• This is followed by the removal of the bone spurs and disk fragments

• The incision is closed and covered.

What to expect after the treatment?

• After the surgery, you will be shifted to the recovery room where you will be kept under observation
• Soon after you gain consciousness, you will be asked to move around. This, however, is not for patients who also had a spinal fusion
