What is Laminectomy?
Laminectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the complete or partial removal of the lamina, commonly referred to as the vertebral bone, so as to relieve excess pressure from the spinal cord and the nerve roots. The procedure helps to ease symptoms triggered by a spinal injury, herniated disk, spinal stenosis or tumours (both malignant and benign). Laminectomy is usually recommended by doctors when other treatments fail to induce any significant improvement.

Laminectomy may also be performed to extract bone spurs, which again, can put unnecessary pressure on the brain and spinal cord. These can give rise to symptoms like:

  • Persistent back pain and discomfort
  • Numbness in the lower limbs
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Trouble with motor skills

Things you need to know

  • The procedure will take anywhere between 1 to 3 hours, depending upon the adversity of the problem that is to be addressed.
  • Your average hospital stay will be around 2 to 5 days depending upon your convalescence
