How to prepare for the treatment?

  • Your healthcare provider will discuss the entire procedure with you.
  • The doctor will analyze your complete medical history by performing a complete physical exam, blood tests, or other diagnostic tests.
  • Also, tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines, supplements that you may be taking.
  • The healthcare team will suggest you go for brain-imaging studies such as an MRI, before the surgery to map your brain's sites to implant the electrodes.

 Procedure involved

  • At the initial stage of operation, a head frame is positioned on your head, fixing your head during brain imaging.
  • Screws or surgical pins will be used to secure your head to the frame.
  • The neurosurgeon will implant the deep brain stimulation system in two different stages:
  • A small hole will be made in the skull. Electrodes having led at the end are passed through this hole and surgically implanted in the brain areas identified as the site(s) contributing to the symptoms.
  • A lead is arranged on one side of the brain unless symptoms exist on both sides of the body.
  • Each side of the brain regulates the opposite side of the body, so each lead is embedded in the opposite part of where symptoms appear.
  • One week later, in a separate operation, one or two battery-powered pulse generator devices are fixed just under the skin in your upper chest area below your collarbone.
  • An extension wire is connected to the lead already located in the brain, then burrowed under your skin behind your ear and down your neck to the pulse generator device.
  • After the implant surgery, the implanted pulse generator is turned on by a hand-held device, and the electrical pulses are modified until symptoms improve. (The machine transmits electric pulses to the brain with the help these leads.) The hand-held device can also monitor the battery level and can switch the device on and off.
  • Several follow-up programming visits will be called to fine-tune the stimulation transmitted to the brain to relieve symptoms.
  • You will also have to visit a doctor regularly to make sure that the system is working correctly. The doctor will adjust the stimulation as called for and also check the battery life of the device.

What to expect after the treatment?

  • The hospital stay after the DBS surgery is 24 hours.
  • But sometimes, it may be longer depending on how quickly the patient recovers.
  • The doctor will guide you with home instructions.
  • At home, you will have to keep the incision clean and dry.
  • The surgeon will give you the details with specifics on how you can bathe the surgical site.
  • After a follow-up visit, the stitches will be removed.
  • A magnet will be given to the patient to turn the neurostimulator on or off under their doctor's conditions.
